Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild Conference

In celebration of its 30th anniversary, The Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild (CBBAG) is pleased to present its first national book arts conference in conjunction with the opening of Art of the Book 2013. There is an exciting line-up of extraordinary presenters and workshops spanning July 6th through 19th.

Equally of interest to Bookbinders, Artists, Librarians, and Conservators, it is a rare melding of practice and theory. Conference presentations discuss issues in adding modern bindings to ancient books, creating modern fine press books, research into historical book structures and more. Workshops include historical book structures, paper decorating, bookbinding, letterpress, and wood engraving.

Off Centre – Clay Arts Symposium

CAG members Julia Rayne Schumacher and Priscilla Janes are exhibiting in a juried show put on by the Alberta Potter’s Association in Calgary. Off Centre is a juried show featuring 29 clay artists from Alberta. This event surrounds two days of talks and workshops put on by renowned Alberta artists.

Julia and Priscilla would like to extend an invitation to all CAG members to attend the exhibition and opening reception.

Exhibition Dates: May 3 – 25
Opening Reception: Friday, May 10, 6pm

Saturday Gone to the Animals Workshop

From our wonderful workshop coordinator Myrle Christensen:

We have a very special workshop coming up on Saturday, May 18^th. Yes – I know it is the Saturday of the May long weekend – BUT – it may be snowing and what better way to spend that day than working with the wonderful painter ERICA NEUMANN painting the wild animals you love the most. View samples of her artwork on this promotional poster for the workshop.

This workshop is open to watercolour, acrylic, and oil paints and pastel. You will also be sketching with charcoal.

The Workshop will be held at Our Lady of the Snows – Art Room and will run from 9am to 4pm.

The cost for a CAG Member is $35.00; and for a non-member (available after April 29) $70.00.

If you are interested please e-mail me immediately at machris@telus.net and leave payment in the donation box at the gallery withing a couple of days of sending your e-mail. Members have already been asking for the date – so if you are interested act quickly.

Once I have received your e-mail I will send out the list of supplies required.

This is going to be a very memorable workshop. And Yes – we will have coffee there!

Postcard Challenge Fundraiser: May 3-21

Submissions
Have you created your postcard masterpieces yet? There is a box on the counter in the CAG Gallery kitchen for you to put your postcards into. The earlier you submit them, the easier it will be for the coordinators to prepare them for hanging, etc. The final deadline for submissions is April 30th.

Volunteers needed
A couple more volunteers are needed to make the Postcard Challenge fundraiser a success. If you can help, please let Catharine know at findlce@telus.net.

CAG Members Invited to Participate in Kananaskis Parks Day

Alberta Parks has invited CAG members to participate in their annual Kananaskis Parks Day, which will take place on Sunday, July 21st in the Willow Park Campground from 10am to 3pm (set-up will start at 8:30am and take down will be at 3pm). Parks Day is meant to celebrate and demonstrate everything that Kananaskis has to offer, and to educate, inform and entertain the public.

Artists are expected to do plein-air mountain-themed paintings and be willing to interact with visitors to Parks Day. Photographers could give advice on composition, technical tips, etc.
Artists may display and sell their art, and hand out their business cards, with 20% of sales going to Alberta Parks to help cover their costs.
There will be a canopy for CAG artists to work under, but artists may also position themselves elsewhere on the Parks Day site, with an opportunity to sketch the birds/animal skulls and bones/fish/horses, etc. which will be on site, again interacting with visitors.
Annual attendance at Parks Day averages about 2,000, so this is a great opportunity for CAG members to promote their art.
If any CAG member is interested in putting on a kids’ art workshop (such as mask painting at Kids Art a couple of years ago), that would be welcomed. Volunteers for this could also have their work displayed and sold.

In addition to artists, volunteers will also be needed to:

Take in money and provide receipts, etc.
1 or 2 volunteers to put on a kids’ art workshop.
Someone to be the overall coordinator and liaison with Alberta Parks.

Calgary Art Walk 2013

The application for Calgary Art Walk 2013 is now available online!

Hosted by Canadian artists for the poor, Calgary Art Walk happens on Stephen Avenue on the first Thursdays of June, August, and September, plus July 1st.

There are thousands of people who walk along Stephen Avenue. It’s a great location for exposure and it’s only $100 to participate. Please follow the links below for further information on their website.
